Five Patch Quilt Block Directions

A good quilt block for the beginning quilter, the Double V is quickly pieced using rotary cutting and speed piecing techniques.

Help, I need a quick review of Rotary Cutting and Speed Piecing.

Note: all seam allowances are 1/4" unless otherwise specified.

Fabric

one focus fabric

One background fabric

Cutting the fabric

	four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of focus fabric
	four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles of background fabric
	one 2-1/2" square of focus fabric
	one 2-1/2" strip of focus fabric at least 11" long
	one 2-1/2" strip of background fabric at least 11" long

Piecing the block

	1) Piece together the 2-1/2 strip of background fabric and the 2-1/2" of focus fabric. Press the seam allowance toward the focus fabric.
	2) With a rotary cutter, straighten the short edge of the strips joined in Step 1. Then cut four 2-1/2" rectangles from the sewn strips as shown. These completed rectangles should measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2".
	3) Take one of the units completed in Step 2 and piece together with one of the 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectagles of focus fabric as shown. Press the seam allowance toward the focus fabric rectangle. Repeat with the three remaining Step 2 units and focus fabric rectangles. The resulting units should measure 4-1/2" square.
	4) Piece together two of the 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" background fabric rectangles and the 2-1/2" square of focus fabric as shown to create the center row of the Double V quilt block. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric rectangles. The finished unit should measure 2-1/2" x 10-1/2".
	5) Take two of the units completed in Step 3 and piece with one of the remaining 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" background fabric rectangles as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the background fabric rectangle. Repeat with the two remaining Step 3 units and the background fabric rectangle. This will form the top row and the bottom row of the Dounbe V block. These finished rows should measure 4-1/2" x 10-1/2".
	6) Take the middle row completed in Step 4 and piece together with the top row and the bottom row completed in Step 5. Press the seam allowances toward the center of the block. The completed quilt block should measure 10-1/2" square which includes a 1/4" seam allowance on all sides.
